Fear and Faith
Mountain Climbers rely on a large thick rope as an anchor point. They trust that the rope will hold and that the hook on the end will not fall off whatever it attached to. In essence, they have faith that their rope will support them despite not being able to see where it landed. Our faith in God is like that. God cannot be seen yet he asks us to trust in him. God and his promises are so grand so awesome and so far beyond our comprehension that often we find ourselves doubting. We have a hard time comprehending that God can truly love us. I sometimes have a hard time comprehending eternity in his presence. Life and the cares of the world weigh in around us and we feel the walls of our own concerns and worries close in on us.
In those moments we need to learn to trust in God. To put our faith in him and to not let our doubts get the better of us. Matthew 14:22-33 discusses an event when the Disciples saw Jesus walk on the water they were terrified, thinking he was a ghost. When Jesus called out to reassure them, Peter decided to step out in faith and walk on the water to Jesus. At first He successfully walked on the water but then he saw the storm ragging and lost sight of Jesus. He began to sink! Similarly we who believe in God often become distracted by the worries and concerns of our lives. When that happens we begin to sink.
At this poin Peter could have let the storm overwelm him and sink him but he didn’t he called out to Jesus, we too, have a choice we can either let ourselves sink further into the waters of fear, we can give into dispair and let the devils voice overwhelm us or we can cry out to God, Peter did and Jesus saved him in that momenet, so to will he save us as well. Matthew 6: 25-34 tells us to not worry about life or the future, God who looks after birds and creatures who don’t worry cares for us who do even more. We can’t change the future instead we must trust God to keep his promises. We must cast all our concerns on to God and lean not on our own understanding ( 1 Peter 5:7, Proverbs 3:5-6). Trusting God as our anchor gurentees us peace as he climbs life’s mountains with us.
